A graduate of the University of Art and Design Helsinki, Mia Halme is famous for her films Iso poika (2008), Joka toinen pari (2016) and Ikuisesti sinun (2011), which won the award for best documentary in the 2012 Jussi Awards. Halme’s films often feature themes of human relationships, family and freedom, as well as human dignity. In her films, Halme looks beyond societal and private facades to find the comical side of structures and the everyday. Getting its world premiere in DocPoint’s Finnish Competition, People We Come Across takes on how people relate to others, this time through the twists and turns brought on by scientific work. The film’s lead is Anu Kantele, a doctor of tropical diseases. In Benin in West Africa, Kantele leads a study for a diarrhea vaccine that could save the lives of millions of children. When the vaccine is tested on 700 helpful Finnish tourists, an unusual vacation to a little village in the tropics begins.
