Suvi West

Suvi West (1982) is a Sámi director and screenwriter. Originally from Tenojokivarsi, West has made several documentary films and TV series since starting her career in  2004. Her works have been presented at film festivals all over the world. West’s first feature-length film Sparrooabbán won the audience award at DocPoint in 2016. To TV audiences, West is familiar from works like the comedy series Märät säpikkäät, which she co-created with Anne Kirste Aikio. West is a part of the Miracle Workers collective, who represented Finland in the Venice Biennale in 2019. She is also a member of the collective Siidaskuvla, as well as a member of Ellos Suttesája, a group focused on protecting a holy fountain of the Sámi. West’s newest feature Eatnameamet –  Our Silent Struggle , getting its Finnish premiere in DocPoint’s Finnish Competition, is about the Sámi politics of Finland and the Sámi people’s fight for their future.
